2010-2011: EUAN FRASER
Euan is a graduate of Strathclyde University (with a first class degree) who has already started on a two year MSc IT Product Design programme at the University of Southern Denmark.
The appeal of this particular programme is that it is both international and multidisciplinary, integrating students from industrial design, engineering, cultural communications and economics. It is also based in a Scandinavian tradition of involving end users in design processes.
Both his Scottish and Danish teachers speak very highly of his ability. From Strathclyde: "His final year project was the most comprehensive and impressive offering I have reviewed from any student in DMEM (Design, Manufacture and Engineering Management) over four years of final year project assessment". From Soenderborg: "A valuable asset... he is at the very top of the programme... extraordinary personal and commuication skills ... Euan Fraser has great potential".
2009-10: MADS DEMENIKOV
Having studied at the Technical University of Denmark as well as in the States, he is now engaged in a PhD at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh. He is working on the development of a new class of zoom lense that exploits a form of digital coding which will enable a new level of miniaturisation to be achieved as well as providing the facility of zooming with a single moving optical element. His referees describe his work as a "disruptive step forward" and one which "promises to change the way we think of a wide range of optical systems". Mads has published i n the most respected technical journal, Optics Express, and has presented papers at various international conferences. But before talking from elevated academic platforms he had already demonstrated an early commitment to promoting a wider understanding of science as a "science-show performer" at the Science Centre, Experimentarium, near Copenhagen.
