NEW YEAR CONCERT

Britten Theatre (Royal College of Music)

Subject to confirmation, the UK-EU Societies hope to present a celebrated wind quintet, a harp duo, a Russian virtuoso solo violinist performing Elgar, Ravel and excerpts from Porgy and Bess, a solo pianist, a trumpeter with piano accompaniment, and - to round off the concert - Romanian soprano Monica Bancos (finalist in this year's Kathleen Ferrier competition) and tenor Tyler Clarke (winner of the opera prize at this year's Les Azuriales international competition) will sing arias and duets from operas by Puccini, Massenet and others. Further details of the programme will be available nearer the date.

The Britten Theatre is part of the Royal College of Music, although it has its own entrance right next to the RCM situated behind the Royal Albert Hall. The theatre was opened by Her Majesty The Queen in 1986 in celebration of the College's centenary. It was designed by Sir Hugh Casson and named after Benjamin Britten, a former student of the College, and audiences appreciate its simple elegance, responsive acoustics and intimate tiered auditorium.
