THE ART WORKERS' GUILD
4 March 2009
By 2.30pm we were at the doors of the guild in Queen Square and quickly found ourselves in the stunning Main Hall surrounded by portraits of all the past Masters. Peyton told us stories of some of the more colourful Masters, and particularly mentioned William Morris; J.D. Sedding (Holy Trinity Church, Sloane Street); and J.D. Belcher (Institute of Chartered Accountants).
Members who couldn't attend will get some idea of how enthralled we were to be in the Main Hall listening to Alison in her official robes, which were designed by C.F.A. Voysey.
Alison gave us a Powerpoint presentation of some of her work - drawings, water colours, and portraits. She has been privileged to have drawn and painted musicians and performers, for example, in Salisbury and York Cathedrals, and the Festival Hall. She captures the atmosphere perfectly and you imagine you can almost hear music as you look at her images...
Much of her work in Denmark is devoted to painting portraits and landscapes, many around the coast of northern Sjaelland.

"The Guild - founded by the leading lights of the Arts and Crafts movement in the 1890s - is a society of artists, craftsmen and designers, with a common interest in the interaction, development and distribution of creative skills. The Guild believes that art, craft and design should be invigorating and positive in outlook, at a time when much art remains alienating and self-indulgent."
